Spennymoor mural festival

Abstract art in Spennymoor

As part of the Spennymoor Mural Festival I have installed 6 artworks on lamp posts through the town centre.

Many thanks to Durham Spray Paints for the opportunity. It’s an interesting intervention and direction for me as these artworks are part of my abstract work and exist in parallel with the culture of Spennymoor. Spennymoor has a rich history and mining culture, being home to Norman Cornish (1919 - 2014) the last surviving member of the Pitmans Academy. Norman Cornish painted scenes from live’s of miners and their families.

While I often paint murals featuring cultural heritage of the locations they’re in, these artworks are a much more personal expression, abstractions which follow from a line of work focusing on the energy and flow experienced when existing in nature, swimming in the North Sea or running along the beach. Combining this energy with hints of letter forms left over from my days painting graffiti in the 00’s, you see the result here.

4 of the paintings are studies, a brand new technique that I’m very excited about. It’s interesting to install this straight onto the street, with no explanation.

The last 2 paintings jump back in time and precede the works that I have on display in the Bob Abley Art Gallery in the Spennymoor Town Council building.
